OXYGEN CLUB OF GREATER WASHINGTON, DC, INC.

OXYGEN CLUB LOGO

The Oxygen Club of Greater Washington, DC is an independent, incorporated tax-exempt organization. Active members live in the greater Washington, DC area. The only stipulation for joining this organization is that one has an interest in reactive oxygen species in biological organisms. Reactive oxygen species include the superoxide radical anion, peroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, lipid hydroperoxides, hydroxyl radical, alkoxyl radicals, thiyl radicals, ozone, singlet oxygen, and the nitrogen free radicals, i.e., nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. Members are encouraged to join The Oxygen Society. The Club holds monthly meetings, except during the summer. The last meeting in the Spring is usually a dinner meeting. The Club has sponsored two International Symposia, one in 1990 and the second in 1993. A book followed the 1993 symposium.

A special Symposium honoring Dr. Daniel L. Gilbert was organized by Dr. Chuang C. Chiueh and was held on July 2, 1998. The title of the Symposium was Reactive Oxygen Species: From Radiation to Molecular Biology & Its Implications and was held in Lipsett Amphitheater, Bldg. 10, NIH. This symposium has been published as a Festschrift to Daniel L. Gilbert in the Annals of The New York Academy of Sciences, Vol. 899, 2000.

The Oxygen Society awarded the LIFETIIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD on November 22, 1998 to Dr. Daniel L. Gilbert.

The NIH Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)Interest Group was organized at the December 11, 1996 monthly meeting of the Oxygen Club of Greater Washington, DC, Inc. The co-organizers are Drs. Chuang C. Chiueh chiueh@helix.nih.gov and Daniel L. Gilbert dangil@helix.nih.gov. It was decided that all members of the Oxygen Club who are members of the NIH will automatically become members of the NIH Reactive Oxygen Species Interest Group. This procedure was necessary to avoid putting the Oxygen Club as an outside NIH activity and not getting on the NIH Calendar of Events.

All members should update their addresses, FAX numbers, and EMAIL addresses.

The Oxygen Club of Greater Washington, Inc. is on the World Wide Web (http://rsb.info.nih.gov/o2-club/). A link exists to the Oxygen Club from the NIH Reactive Oxygen Species Interest Group (http://www.nih.gov/sigs/rosig/).

All members should update the member application forms. Everyone, who has an interest in this field, is encouraged to join. THERE ARE NO MEMBERSHIP DUES!
